SEO - What Do You Know?
What is SEO exactly?
T-SEG (The Search Engine Glossary) gives a great definition of SEO:
“This term is widely used in the search engine industry as a collective name for those activities that are directly or indirectly aimed at improving a page’s search engine ranking. Sometimes the term SEO is also used to refer to providers of SEO services - in other words it’s used in the place of terms like “SEO provider” and “SEO specialist”.
Who Needs SEO?
Don’t let this date scare you. This was quite a notable revelation impacting the development of SEO as we know it - In 2001, iProspect reported: “Companies damage their ability to be found online by propspective customers” more here.
Their results showed that 90% of fortune 100 companies use technology that search engines (otherwise known as SE’s) have difficulty reading! I mean, do you realize how many customers are lost as a result of not properly optimizing your site so it can be found by eager consumers who want to buy, buy, buy?
How about that newsletter that you offer to people that you are anxious to show your product to? Well, they may not know you exist if you aren’t being found in the search engines!
Maybe you are patiently waiting for that beautiful flow of visitors that will see your site and think they’ve found heaven. “Gee, there’s just so many wonderful things to choose from! I just don’t know where to begin!”
Sorry to be the one that breaks your heart…but that is NOT going to happen if your site isn’t optimized. What’s more likely to happen is all of your potential customers will go to their keyboard, asking their favorite search engine to show them results for the keyword phrase, “Blah Blah Blah” and, even though your site is all about “Blah Blah Blah”, if your site is not optimized, they are most likely to find your competitors site, not yours. (if your site hasn’t been given an SEO overhaul, I’m sure you have already seen this first hand)
Whether you are the Big Cheese at a Major corporation or Joe Blow selling Silly Dillies, the future of your aspirations depend upon SEO. Unless, of course, you are perfectly satisfied with spending precious time and energy just being you….awe, that’s so sweet… ![]()
I recommend Aaron Wall’s SEO Book as a valuable resource. Learning SEO Basics is not familiar territory to a Newbie. Take advantage of what he offers.
