What is Social Media - Google
I searched Google for it’s definition - “define social media” (without quotes). This is what I received:
- Search Engine Watch
A category of sites that is based on user participation and user-generated content. They include social networking sites like LinkedIn or Facebook, social bookmarking sites like Del.icio.us, social news sites like Digg or Reddit, and other sites that are centered on user interaction.
- Batch Book
The term social media describes media that is posed by the user and can take many different forms. Some types of social media are forums, message boards, blogs, wikis and podcasts. Social media applications include Google, Facebook and YouTube.
- Bottle
Software tools that allow groups to generate content and engage in peer-to-peer conversations and exchange of content (examples are YouTube, Flickr, Facebook, MySpace etc)
- Multi-platform
Online technologies and practices that people use to share opinions, insights, experiences, and perspectives with each other.
You’ll notice, as you read through each definition, that you’re receiving explanations by examples.
That’s because it’s not new, it’s a buzz term by marketers.
It has existed for numerous years.

Social Networking - Second Guessing
I couldn’t figure out which title would be best for this post. It began with 4 possible choices:
- Please Don’t Feed The Animals
- Biting The Hand That Feeds you
- Potty training In 7 Days or Less (as a LoL to Doug Heils comment)
- or Potty Training The Animals While They Bite The Hand That Feeds Them
But, I’d rather not be focused on negative energy today, only my usual notations of observations in the blogosphere. So, the present title stands.
Social Networking - Two Sides to Every Story?
Aaron Wall’s “Unintended Consequences” article was unbiased, yet provoked much thought and responses on both his blog and at Sphinn as well. (Sphunn post here)
A select few, who may possibly be considered to have personal agendas, made it very clear that “herd mentality” is not only the norm, but is also supported..sometimes by whatever means necessary.
If you have an opinion contrary to the ‘herd’, they want you to feel cautious about voicing it.
It’s evident that your input (if contrary) will not be shined upon favorably by those who defend ‘herd mentality’.

Marketing Suggestion - Keep Fellow Marketers (’Friends’) In Proper Perspective

“The advice of friends must be received with a judicious reserve; we must not give ourselves up to it and follow it blindly, whether right or wrong.” ~ Pierre Charron
This weekend, a very close friend of mine was penalized and treated unfairly by someone he had considered to be a ‘friend’ - professionally and otherwise.
He had dedicated years of quality assistance, professional expertise and rearing in order to nurture a well known marketing forum. As a matter of fact, he was one of the founders and took great pride in his participation there.
Hours, days, nights, valuable time and energy was extended to ensure the success of the forum in reference. He granted support and sincere concern for it’s members as well as to complete strangers that visited. His provisions included free backend work, establishing formats of various initiatives which guided their directives, donated public speeches & conference efforts, and shared after hours friend-chat and bond building on a personal level.
His ‘friend’ had gotten offended by a negative review of her, by another friend of his, in Stumbleupon.

The Two Faces of the Ethical Coin
Saturday, June 28th, 2008Is Li Evans talking out of both sides of her mouth?
Is she discussing ethics vigor because she uses it as a means of gain?
Do loyal readers and followers equal job security for her?
When I think of her and many others, the first thing that comes to mind is “Greenwashing“.
“attempting to preserve and expand their markets or power by posing as friends of the environment.”
On a personal, behind the scenes note, I don’t trust her farther than I can throw her. She has shown herself to be two-faced.
Ethics? Ha! If you say something contrary to what she is promoting (or ‘gaming’) she exits you stage left for fear of being exposed. Can’t have that.
I won’t name names here, because I really do not want to get into the he said she said drama. but, ethics is not her forte’. She’s done everything she can to make me and my blog suffer because of our behind the scene issues. She’s brought the posse out, because they know that I got fed up with bogus, manipulative, callous, greedy people like themselves, so they have chosen to talk more about ethics and goodness and wholesomeness, because there’s a part of them that feels threatened by me, this blog, and the people that I may expose them to.
