Supporter of Ethical Marketing

By Kimberly Bock | May 23, 2008

change

Marketing doesn’t have to be a dirty word.

After serious thought, and reconsideration of my goals for this site, I have changed “Learning SEO Basics - Search Engine Optimization for the Curious Newbie” to “Learning SEO Basics - Supporter of Ethical Marketing”.

The best contribution to marketing isn’t requested of someone else.

It’s given.

There will be gradual changes in the overall content here.

I am on the lookout for marketers / bloggers that are actively involved with charitable organizations, environmental causes, and endeavors that are of benefit to the welfare of humanity, including marketers blogs that are focussed upon ethical marketing. Regular activity in something as simple as Facebook causes where games are played for free is a good and fun way to contribute as well as make terrific friends. (Play a game with a like-minded person, and you’ve scored a meal for someone. Not bad I’d say.)

It’s not all that difficult to think of someone other than yourself.

  • Be the change you wish to see.
  • I will support others’ marketing efforts, unless I learn that their money making is of unethical value. If that happens, its my responsibility to NoFollow that individual. I am heavily involved in a multitude of social networking environments. (See About page) so its likely that I will be of service to you in more than one way. I have been doing it for many everyday. I’d like to revamp my efforts to be all inclusive of those for positive change. I am not even sure who that might be, yet..I will stick with being of support of some of the persons I have already been in support of. I’m sure they already know who they are. :-)
  • This is not a million dollar blog. But, it is one that can provide link juice to those who deserve it most. And it is one that will be used as a quality resource for the readers that take the time to visit. (fyi, at PR4..hoping for gradual improvement over time)Just to clarify, I will not be focused on environmental post submissions here. That is what I use Yicrosoft Directory Girl for, amongst other things. The content here will remain relevant to search engine optimization, social media / networking, and other marketing information. If you have something relevant to YDG’s content, send it my way. Please, if you have found that I have referenced (gave link juice to) a person found to be unethical, tell me and he / she will be promptly removed.
We are small fish in a huge sea. Tiny waves are good.

PS: If you are a green person at heart, or otherwise environmentally friendly, I am posting this as a banner, that will remain for as long as it takes to build a network of marketers that wish to be included in this arrangement. Leave your homepage URL, a description of your environmental interests, URL’s showing your activities / causes, or URL’s to posts you have written regarding environmental support, etc. I will visit the links to verify. Then your site will be added to a special RSS folder and homepage URLs will be added to my blogroll under the “ethical marketers” category for those that have been approved. It would be nice to see more of that between each other.

Over time, this site will be a personalized sort of aggregator for a community that is green minded, ethically secure, and positively rooted in online pursuits. It may take some time to get this off the ground, but anything worthwhile is worth striving for.

    Contribution and gratitude.

Wow Kim, I wasn’t expecting to read this when I popped in this evening. This is a really cool thing to do, ethical companies/organisations deserve a spotlight like this being shone in their direction. I hope all goes well, although I have no doubt you will give your all and make a success of this.

I gotta be true to myself though afterall what else do we have eh, and say that the idea that someone getting a meal may depend on someone else playing a game just doesn’t sit well with me. I mean: is this where we are now? to alleviate the misfortune of one, another must have fun, ICK

That said, you have my support as always and I’ll do what I can in my own little way to point people in your direction.

My brain is a little slow today - we are supposed list the blogs and blog posts here that are about something environmentally friendly?

      1) I’ve got this blog: http://www.butterflygardeningandconservation.com/wpblog/ - growing plants that are native to the area you live in is good for local wildlife (like butterflies) and helps to preserve native habitats.

      2) I wrote a series of posts for Earthday: http://www.ideasforwomen.com/news/environment/2008/04/21/166/

Hey Kimberly, many thanks for writing such an inspiring post. Marketing for social change is not just helpful for our society and planet, but also a lot of fun, too.

Here’s some of the ways that I’m marketing my organization, The Nature Conservancy:

james, thanks! a niche indeed. well needed.
rudy, you’re more than welcome. thank you also.
thanks bill. it was either 1) complain about it to people that obviously do not care to make changes in how they conduct business, or 2) do something positive to combat it.
i like option 2 best. option 1 is like throwing pearls before swine.
catherine, if it takes a game to stimulate that sense of empathy, then so be it. strengthening the bonds between ethical marketers, is a huge way of combating the greedy mindsets that have contributed to much of the detachment that has been built within humanity.
trisha thanks, added it to my yicrosoft blogroll. i’ve also added your ‘butterfly gardening blog’ to yicrosoft on the ‘environment’ page. grabbed feed from both as well. thanks for the contributions.
jonathon, i have admired you for a long time. you do so much for our environment it make my head spin! which country shall you be in tomorrow? ask bill, im always saying, ‘uh oh..jonathon wouldnt like that.’ haha..its like that saying for christians, ‘what would Jesus do?’ but environmentally speaking, it’s ‘what would jonathon do?’ lol
thanks for yur contributions and for the kind words. i already have you in both blogrolls. :-)

This is a very informative post. I totally believe 100 percent about what you are saying in this article. Most people think that Marketing is a ploy to try to draw in customers, but when done right it can supply the consumer with the exact product they are looking for. This blog is very nicely written and I look forward to reading more of your work.

This is a very thought provoking post. I have always been green minded, but for some reason I have never bridged that mindset with my work. Work has always been work, and I have not really gone green in that area.
I guess now would be a great time to stop and think about the green subject that means the most to me and make a plan to actually do more about it.

My daughter has cerebral palsey and I do regular charity things for that. But what is interesting, is how chrities in the UK are having to change how they market themselves to imporve their donations. In better words, paying for advertising to get get a greater reward in return.
This has been happening for decades in the USA, but not som much in the UK. So ethical marketing has to be the key in these circumstances.
