Learning SEO: Stumpedia Search Engine
By Kimberly Bock | February 27, 2008
This has been an exciting morning. Actually I’ve had an exciting couple of days reorganizing and setting things straight in life and search. Thanks to a little help from my friends. (that would be you - smile)
I received an email from Mixx alerting me to a friendship request along with a newly submitted link. The notification came from Stumpedia (Mixx profile here), the minds behind the brand spanking new ‘people driven‘ search engine, Stumpedia.com!
The link they sent to me led to PR Web Press Release News Wire announcing Stumpedia.com’s launch.
Is Stumpedia.com what the doctor ordered? (In closing I’ll mention a couple of my concerns as well.)
Stumpedia.com does not rely on others to approve of relevancy or ‘Ranking’ in SERPs, there’s no bots, no algorithms, just you and I submitting the websites and adding our chosen keywords. Human META keyword tags so to speak.
They refer Stumpedia.com as a ‘democratic‘ search engine. This search engine will also be used to find information about other people as well of course. (which can be scary..I’ll discuss in closing)
They provide a help forum to those of us who may have suggestions, questions, comments and concerns of any kind.
My concerns:
1. Who’s to stop someone from submitting asinine keywords for my site? Which can pose the same threat to reputaion management as SU’s tagging abuse..(Read one example of SU tagging abuse affecting reputation for this professional business woman here)
2. Who’s to stop me from going from A-Z with my keyword submissions? If I am a spammer, by the time I’m done with it, you can search for “your mama” and “Learning SEO Basics” will pop up! Hmm..Not a bad idea..thinking…thinking…
Ok, so I’m not a spammer..I’ll behave myself…But the fact remains that it is a weakness of theirs that could be improved upon. That’s why we need to participate in the forum with our suggestions. WE are creating it’s future. Your opinion counts with this one. The newbies. (and with this one, we are all newbies. Even the old SEO dogs)
With a little bit of “Tweaking” between us (you and I) over the course of time, we may really have something worthwhile in Stumpedia.com.
You are now officially a part of the search history making business. Have fun with it!
PS: The official release post from Stumpedia.com can be Sphunn here if you are interested. Thanks!

I don’t believe the big three have anything to worry about with this Search Engine. How is this different from a bookmarking site like delicious?

Hi Adam,
LoL..the big three… Yup, I think you’re right about that one.
I think what is most appealing to me is the fact that there is room for improvement by the user. I could be wrong as I won’t know too many specifics until I have entered topics in their forum for the answers, I don’t believe we are seeing a finished product.
At first glance this is basically a concept that is very similar to a bookmarking site such as del.icio.us yes..But with many more similarities to a voting system within our search in creating what stays in the front pages of results.
So the look and feel is as if we’re searching the web with Google or Yahoo! for example, but with the benefits of our input in the voting process as what keeps pages in the first pages or farther down the slope of results.
(did that make sense?)

Great looking site. I’m submitting one of my blogs their and adding a ton of relevant keywords. Over the next week or so I will be interested to see if I do get any traffic.

Ok..I’ll be in there at some point this weekend to take a look at what you submit..It’s likely to be something worth voting for knowing you.
Be sure to register with the forum if you get the chance. They need input and are willing to listen..
Thanks for commenting..:-)

I posted my site there but haven’t got any traffic yet. I guess they are not big enough to get a lot of traffic themselves anyway.
I am a bit wary about their human powered search aspect. It is really prone to spam I think and there is no way to deal with that. If there is a way, Google would have done that.

Google is almighty whether we like it or not. People don’t search the internet anymore - they Google it.
