Learn SEO: The Unexplored Values of Twitter
There’s plenty of talk within our daily blog reading about the benefits or lack thereof in utilizing “Twitter” with a wide array business, marketing, and social media endeavors…
Kim Kraus of cr8pc On Usability and holistic SEO is having an ongoing conversation in Sphinn right now about her thoughts on using Twitter. She wrote a blog post entitled, “Why I don’t want to Twitter my life away“.
Her post blurb upon submission to Sphinn reads,
“Twitter may be one of those things that, like all the social networking sites and software I’m invited to join, are truly threats to my valuable time. “
If you visit the Sphinn conversation or cr8pc comments, you’ll find alot of the same sorts of arguments as to why Twitter is beneficial or a pain in the Gluteus maximus.
I think the main reason that I was stimulated to write this particular post is due to her Sphinn comment which read,
“Some people share too much information as well…very personal stuff that I don’t need or want to know. I don’t want to add Twittter on top of this buzz.”
But, I think that’s a major plus, not a minus.
Seeing others’ ‘personal’ tweets gives me a better understanding of the minds behind the blogging pen, therefore enabling me to feel a little more at ease with my associates. Not only that, but I see an opportunity to evaluate who it is that I am following/who’s following me, to help in the “Should I ‘friend’ with them” process. Twitter can be a valuable tool in assessing which crowd best suits your tastes/interests…
Maybe some are more inclined to drink their Friday nights away whereas you are a home-body that chooses to remain at the computer and perform well needed tasks..If you know these things about people, it can help to shape your time-structuring around each other, knowing who’s most reliable at certain times as you are promoting their interests and vice versa..
Also, Twitterers have a tendancy to Tweet things like “This kid is driving me nuts! I wish his mother was home!”…You may remember a post off the top of your head that is helpful advice in this situation. Why not Tweet it? Why not use Twitter, not only for selfish gain, but as a tool that helps us as real-life people?
I have a friend that’s actively involved in Nature Conservancy issues. His endeavors are helping to save the earth that we are destroying. Sometimes I’ll see something pop up in his Tweets sending a photo link or blog link that is designed to help mankind. Why wouldn’t I want to see this as opposed to missing an opportunity to be of service? . I have viewed his qualities by watching him in Facebook updates and Tweets which encouraged me to become more involved. I would not have had that as readily at my disposal had I chose to dismiss Twitter and apps like Twitter.
Are we more likely as a human race, to sacrifice our physical lives for our country than we are to sacrifice one small Tweet for mankind? If that Tweet hits 1 tiny little eyeball and finds it interested, the possibilities are endless. And this is the same advantage for SEO/M, Social Networking/Media, saving a patch of rainforest, or sharing a break-time video.
On an SEO tip:
In the past week, I’ve had the advantage of being one of the first to view a new post by Search Engine Land, SEO Roundtable etc, getting involved from the very beginning of the conversations. It is always a learning experience and Twitter was what brought it to my attention..
Due to getting firsthand Tweets from these providers, I have been able to create timely blog posts myself, keeping up with passing it on to this site (you) in a timely fashion. I am not always as organized as I should be and I sometimes get behind on checking the 18 million feeds that I am subscribed to. But due to the Twitter plugins that send out Tweets for brand spanking new posts, it eliminates having to wait for it to come by means of Google alerts or feeds (sometimes alerts and feeds are hesitant)
If there’s fruitless doody popping up in the Tweets..ignore it.
Twitter has boundless capabilities.
It’s the user that optimizes it’s potential or decreases it’s value.

“drink their Friday nights away” - you make it seem like this is a bad thing??
Nice post…

Matt: Everyday I get more out of it. It’s more than just sending a Tweet.

Michael: All’s good in moderation, although I don’t drink a drop.
Me and alcohol don’t get along too well.
Being spanked, beaten, robbed and left without recollection is no longer appealing..
I’ll stick to midnight Tweeting from now on. LoL

Great post!
Back in April I actually used Twitter to help me write an article for WebsiteMagazine.com. I took an informal survey of people about what people felt were the benefits of the service. Got some really interesting and thoughtful responses. See link if you are curious:

Anyway, I’m glad to see people are still finding value in Twitter. Personally, I think it’s amazing and it’s my preferred online social network.
