Learning SEO Tidbits: Did you know?

By Kimberly Bock | January 23, 2008

It’s always helpful to know a bit of search history while learning SEO.

Learning SEO involves observing and analyzing the nature of internet search and it’s progressive evolution. Ever learning. Ever changing. Ever growing. Such as we do as individuals.

That said, here’s some tidbits of the beginnings of internet masterpieces that we take advantage of daily and know very little about:

Firstly, what is the internet?

The internet was in sight in the 1950’s/early 1960’s better known as inter-networking but had not not quite been the internet that we use today! They communicated through what’s called gateways or Network bridges basically for single use purposes.

The internet as WE know it is a group of interconnected computers which are linked together by copper wires, wireless reciprocation, and fiber optics. It harbors the World Wide Web. .

The World Wide Web is made up of a multitude of resources such as documents, URL’s, hyperlinks, text, images, domains, etc..

Domain Name System (DNS)

The Domain Name System was born in 1984. top-level domains were defined in 1985 and these were .com, .org, .edu, .gov, .mil (military), and ccTLD (reserved for a country or dependent territory. Identifiers being 2 letters long. All 2 letter top-level domains are ccTLD’s.)

Who were the Domain Pioneers? (first registrars)

I am still unclear as to who the other pioneers were. Maybe if you know, you can help me out!

One last tidbit

When I posted “Learn SEO: History of Search” I reported the history of Search Engine Optimization before it was extended to the marketing category. (there are still people that are stricly organic search optimizers)

Search Engine Marketing, on the other hand, is additional services that enhance and exceed organic search options or Search Engine Optimization. SEM covers a wide array of arena’s such as Pay Per Click (PPC) campaigns, submissions of URL’s to directories, and management of other paid services and marketing strategies.

Here’s what you may not have already heard..Danny Sullivan, editor-in-chief of Search Engine Land is the first person to ever coin the term SEM (Search Engine Marketing) in 2001. (but of course you say)

Well, that’s it for now!

Have fun learning SEO!

I remember back in the good olde days of sitting in the public library using gopher sites.

I thought Al Gore invented the internet! (little political humor)

I’d like to see a poll illustrating how many people WOULDN’T have guessed Danny Sullivan coined the term SEM. My guess is somewhere in the 5-7% range… Let 2008 be the year everyone coins something.
